Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, grandmother, and godparents. Her father abandoned her family. While she was a small girl, she struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder. She also experienced anxiety because of the word association. Ford's passion for acting started when she was young. She was a part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few days, she concluded that this school wasn't for her. Ford decided to apply instead for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among Ford's classmates. Ford's television debut was in a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". During the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. She worked on stage regularly as well as a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies that were added to her repertoire in 1996.
